The Ultimate Buying Guide for Luxury Queen Over Queen Bunk Beds for Adults
Queen over queen bunk beds give homeowners, vacation rental owners and designers a way to sleep more adults in one room without giving up comfort. Each bunk holds a full queen mattress, which makes this layout a natural fit for guest rooms, lake houses, mountain cabins and short-term rentals. This guide covers what to look for, how queen over queen compares to other layouts, and what to expect when you buy one from Big Sky Bunks.

Why Choose a Queen Over Queen Bunk Bed?
Unlike twin bunks, a queen over queen puts a queen mattress on both levels, so two adults can share each bunk. The Queen over Queen is our all-time best-selling bunk size because it sleeps up to four adults while keeping a moderate footprint. It works especially well for:
Vacation homes and lake houses where families and groups stay together
Airbnb, VRBO and other short-term rentals that want to add guest capacity
Guest rooms that need to sleep more than one couple
Custom adult bunk rooms that should feel as nice as the rest of the house
What to Look For in an Adult Queen Bunk Bed
Solid Construction
A bunk built for adults has to handle real weight and years of use. Look for solid timber posts and rails, heavy hardware and a frame that does not rack or wobble. Big Sky Bunks are built from premium, locally milled lumber and finished with custom oxidized blacksmith hardware. A finished bed weighs 750 to 1,000 lbs depending on size and add-ons, so it stays steady with adults on the top bunk.
Safety Features
The top bunk should have full rails and a ladder that is easy to use at night. Every Big Sky Bunks bed includes double headboards on each bunk level, two rows of wooden safety rails and a wooden end-load ladder. Our metal upgrade swaps the rails, ladder and load-up handle for 1" steel tubing in raw steel or powder-coated black.
Mattress Fit
Our beds work with any type of mattress, including memory foam, wrapped spring hybrid and traditional. To keep enough headroom between bunks, stay in the 8" to 12" range; an 11" mattress fits our beds best. If you choose memory foam, our platform add-on supports the entire bottom of the mattress.
Ceiling Height
Each bunk post is 90" tall to fit most 8 to 9 foot ceilings, and we can cut the posts down for lower rooms. After you order, we send a spec sheet to confirm your ceiling height, bed size, stain color and add-ons.
Finish and Storage
Pick a stain from our in-house colors to match your space. To see a color in person first, order stained wood samples of our rails for $10 per color, and they ship free. For storage, add a twin trundle or soft-close under-bed storage with Amish-built hardwood drawers.

Queen Over Queen vs. Other Layouts
Here is how a queen over queen compares to the other adult bunk layouts we build.
Queen over Queen
Two queen mattresses, up to four adult sleepers and a moderate footprint. It is the best balance of capacity and comfort for most guest rooms and rentals. The Queen over Queen starts at $6,250.
Twin XL over Queen
A queen on the bottom and a twin XL on top keeps the bed from overpowering a smaller room, and the layout can work around a window. It suits families and mixed-age groups. The Twin XL over Queen starts at $6,750.
Quad Bunks
Quad bunks put two bunk beds together to sleep the most guests in one room. The Boise Quad Bunk Bed with Stairs pairs Twin XL over Queen bunks with a staircase that makes the top bunks easier to reach, and it needs 215" of continuous wall space. The Deluxe Quad Bunk Bed adds a middle staircase or shared ladder, LED lights with USB charging ports and soft-close drawers.

Queen Bunk Beds for Vacation Rentals
For rental owners, a queen over queen adds sleeping space without crowding the room, and it gives groups and families a bed adults actually want to sleep in. Look for construction that holds up to frequent guest turnover and a design that looks good in listing photos. Our beds are built for homes, ski cabins and Airbnb or VRBO rentals.
Adult Bunk Room Ideas
Add under-bed storage to keep luggage and extra bedding out of the way.
Choose a stain that suits the home, from warm rustic tones for a cabin to darker finishes for a modern space.
Hang privacy curtains between bunks for guest comfort.
Finish the room with good bedding and reading lights.
Delivery, Assembly and Care
Every bed ships disassembled on a crated pallet, and a freight company lowers it on a liftgate to your driveway. Two people can assemble it in a couple of hours with our step-by-step video and the 8 point socket we include for your drill or impact driver.
If you would rather not assemble it yourself, our Concierge Install Service sends one or two of our builders to your location to install the bed, set up the mattress and bedding, and take final photos. It is $3,000 for up to two beds, plus $500 for each additional bed, and some locations have extra fees.

After setup, check the bolts and hardware now and then, clean the wood with a gentle cleaner, and rotate mattresses so they wear evenly.
